What’s Poppin’? Pop-Up Toy Stores

Toy Stores come in all shapes and sizes, and start their journeys in many different ways. Some toy stores start out as pop-up shops. Let’s take a look at That’s My Collectible, a pop-up vintage toy store in Bernardsville, New Jersey.

Their Story:

“That’s My Collectible was founded in 2021 by an 80’s kid.”

That 80’s kid is Tim Manning, like most of us nostalgia for his childhood has him in its grasp. Tim is a toy enthusiast, a 80’s enthusiast, and a Back to the Future enthusiast. Most importantly he is an entrepreneur. His main business is Wavelength Audio Video, a home automation design and install service.

We first met Tim at the grand opening of Heroes World. We took our DeLorean “Toy Machine” to the opening only to see Tim’s movie accurate DeLorean Time Machine sitting in front. Tim and his family have a business, Doc’s Time Machines, where they make appearances and hold Back to the Future themed events with their replicas of the Doc’s Time Machine, Marty’s Toyota Pickup, and Mayor Goldie Wilson’s Election Van. The events often included actors from the three films.

Talking to Tim that day he mentioned wanting to do something with toys. He had been showing his children his vintage collection to encourage play and hopefully pass on his appreciation for the figures. He did meet his goal as his kids now have a love for G1 Transformers with very few accidents. It’s great to see toys from 40 years ago being played with by children as they were meant to be.

At the same time Manning had also started to expand his collection, getting into the toy community and started selling toys. He started an Instagram page and began looking for a way to sell more regularly. After trying to find vendor space in other stores Tim decided the best way to move forward was to use what he already had… The Wavelength Audio Video Store!

Wavelength Audio Video currently has a retail location that is used to sell home automation equipment and for consultations with clients for installation. The business however is mainly service orientated and doesn’t actually need much retail space. So… Tim has teamed up with fellow collector Adam Sutherland and converted it into That’s My Collectible Pop-Up Vintage Toy Store

The store is full of vintage toys, especially Transformers, Star Wars, and G.I. Joe. In That’s My Collectible you will find an eccentric mix of X-Men figures, newer Funko POPs, He-Man, and Street Sharks. The small space is full of grail level pieces, things that you just don’t see everyday.

The two partners will run the store on weekends until January 14th. This way locals can shop for vintage toys as holiday gifts (or themselves). Staying open into January means that collectors can stop in after the holidays to pick up that certain gift they didn’t receive, That’s My Collectible also has its own gift cards since they know as well as anyone that collectors are very picky and it is often way easier for friends and family to just let them pick for themselves.

It’s our hope Tim and Adam get enough traffic and gain enough momentum to keep the toy shop open after the 14th. Many shop owners start their businesses with a table at a toy show, with a spot at a flea market, or on the internet. Whatever route is taken the team at Toy Store Guide hopes the destination is another local toy store.

You can visit That’s My Collectible in person at
30 Olcott Square, Bernardsville, New Jersey 07924.
They are open on
