Hunting for Nostalgia at a Museum of Nostalgia

New York City is famous for its museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, the Guggenheim, MoMA, and the Intrepid to name just a few. But when Nick Bartley found himself in the Big Apple there was only one museum he wanted to visit… The Museum of Nostalgia.

Located in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, The Museum of Nostalgia is just like all those other museums except instead of displaying dinosaur fossils or “The Starry Night” they display dinosaur toys and vintage Star Wars figures. The main “exhibit” is set up like the most fun basement from a previous childhood, with displays showcasing rare items. What the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier is to a military buff, The Museum of Nostalgia is for the toy community.

It is a collection of all things nostalgic such as toys, vintage board games, television trays, lunch boxes, and strange toy-related merchandise. You may find yourself saying, “I had that!”

“Words cannot express how The Museum of Nostalgia makes you feel. Multiple times during this episode I was reminded of toys, times and memories I had completely forgotten!”

Nick Bartley

Despite that quote, regular viewers already know that in the episode Nick will not stop using words to try express how the museum made him feel. Watch the episode now to join Nick while he helps to finish a puzzle, talks about Paul Reubens meant to him, and reminisces about dressing up as Steve Urkle to annoy his family.

The curators and preservationists of this incredible experience are Phoebe Taylor and Jeff Zappala and the pair know the true meaning of nostalgia! Phoebe is obsessed with Masters of the Universe. Jeff’s favorite toys are anything to do with Transformers. Through immense work and passion like no other they have created a time capsule that you can walk into, sit down inside, and go back in time.

Phoebe and Jeff are also not rookies when it comes to being on television. In 2021, the pair was featured on the HGTV show “Cash in the Attic”. The episode is titled “A Toy Store at Home” and is available to stream on HGTV.com and Discovery+. It was during that experience on the show where the idea for the museum formed.

Jeff and Phoebe originally wanted to open a vintage toy store, but whenever friends visited their apartment they were in awe of their personal collection. They wanted to find a way share their interests and collection with more people. So Phoebe and Jeff decided to aim their efforts at a hybrid toy store and museum. Today The Museum of Nostalgia acts as a museum and a toy store. It serves as a place where both collectors and children can find toys to make their own and a place where visitors can see rare toys and collectibles in person. The couple takes such joy in being able to share their collection with the public, with the added bonus of freeing up room in their crowded apartment.

Since opening the museum has quickly become a part of the neighborhood often hosting events like art shows, the “Must Love Nostalgia Singles Dating Event“ as well as taking part in the “Shop Small Astoria Retail Crawl“

“After you go and soak in all the amazing items in the display room you can walk a few feet out the door to a FANTASTIC, SUPER FAIR PRICED TOY STORE!!!”

Nick Bartley

The Museum of Nostalgia is a truly unique space that combines a love for collecting with a desire to share that passion with others.
